Innovation

A simple definition of innovation is “The generation and adoption of something new (ideas, processes, products, services, models or management approaches etc.) resulting in improved outcomes.” The future competitiveness and success of the UK is to a large extent dependent on our capability to innovate. In March 2008, the Government published Innovation Nation, which states the aim "to make Britain the best country in the world to run an innovative business or public service."

This challenge has risen up the agenda for the health and social care sector over the last few years. The Darzi Next Stage Review ‘Our NHS, Our future’ emphasises the need for the NHS to adopt new products, procedures and processes. The hope is that innovation will contribute to a ‘self-sustaining, self-improving’ NHS.

Tricordant has worked at national and local level on innovation especially within the NHS. We believe that the understanding organisation design gives of how different professionals and players interact within and with complex adaptive socio-technical systems is crucial. This allows us to help leaders build and sustain organisations with a high capacity to identify, lead and absorb innovation.

We also seek to be innovative as a consultancy ourselves as well as helping clients. For example our ‘whole systems rapid improvement events’ is an innovative offering drawing on several fields of practice which we have presented at an international conference. [see Newsletter August 2008].

“The Tricordant team was able to work with a wide and disparate range of stakeholders to develop a powerful understanding of the adoption of innovative technologies in the NHS. They developed practical insights into how to effectively influence this very complex system. These were captured and developed in a robust, practical and well supported business plan, delivered in a timely and professional manner.”
