Dr Robin Youngson is the Clinical Leader at Waitakere Hospital in west Auckland in New Zealand and an anaesthetist. In recent years, Waitakere has revolutionised the process of aligning a local hospital with the needs of a surrounding community by adopting a “whole systems” approach. He combines an engineer’s talent for “systems thinking” (he trained and worked initially as a petroleum engineer) with a passion for humanity and compassion in health care systems. As Acting Chair of EpiQual (the NZ statutory body on patient safety and quality) he was co-author of the national healthcare quality improvement strategy and he is the NZ member on the WHO International Steering Committee for collaboration on patient safety solutions.

Dr Marc Gerstein is a widely recognised expert on strategy, organization design and risk management. He is best known for his work on the relationship between organizational design, information technology and strategy, and as the originator of the concept of organizational architecture. Previously, he was the Executive Vice President for Strategy at Instinet, the electronic trading firm now owned by NASDAQ, a member of the Global Leadership Team of Perot Systems, and Managing Director at Delta Consulting Group. He is the author of The Technology Connection: Strategy and Change in the Information Age and Organizational Architecture: Designs for Changing Organizations. His new book with Daniel and Michael Ellsberg, Flirting with Disaster, will be published in 2008. He is a frequent speaker on the topics of organizational design, risk management and corporate leadership. He lives in New York and London.

Alistair Mant is an international authority on leadership development and executive talent identification. He is Chairman of the UK-based Socio-Technical Strategy Group - a brokerage for carrying out studies of system function and dysfunction. Alistair was born in Australia and spends a third of each year working here with private and public sector clients. He appears regularly on the conference circuit, dealing with leadership, systems thinking, modernisation of government, organisation structure and the strategic aspects of human resource management and development. With a background in business, consultancy, research, academia and authoring books; his Intelligent Leadership was published in Australia in 1997 and became an immediate best-seller.

Hugh Rogers is a consultant urologist with the West Middlesex Hospital, has a long track record in service improvement. As a Clinical Director throughout the ‘90s he led a series of award winning service redesign projects in his trust. From 1999 – 2005 Hugh had a series of leadership roles in the Modernisation Agency, with the Cancer Collaborative and Booking programmes and Improvement Partnership for Hospitals. He is now an Associate in the Service Transformation Team of the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement where he leads on Clinical Systems Improvement. He is expert on interventions to improve clinical reliability and safety and thereby reduce avoidable mortality in hospitals.

Wendy Harris, Branch Head, Patient Safety & Investigations, joined the Department of Health in 2007. She leads a team of ten who are responsible for the implementation of Safety First and other government policy initiatives on patient safety, who ensure consistency and uniform response to investigating serious incidents across the NHS, and who provide DH sponsorship to the NPSA (National Patient Safety Agency). Prior to joining DH Wendy was Head of Safety Solutions for NPSA where she headed up a team of 18 senior clinicians and managers developing safety solutions to a diverse range of patient safety topics. A pharmacist by background she has also previously worked for or on behalf of health authorities (local and regional), Department of Health, and local authorities focusing upon quality and service improvements.

Valerie Iles, is an independent academic consultant working in the field of health management. She teaches, researches and writes about issues at the clinical/managerial interface, and works with a number of universities and client organisations as well as with individuals and teams. She has a particular interest in action learning as a development process and works with many different forms of participative reflection. For nine years she was the director of the Health Management Group at City University, designing and directing three masters degree programmes. She has also been vice chair of a large NHS Trust and of an inner city Health Action Zone.

Alastair Mitchell-Baker is an experienced health consultant and facilitator. He heads up Tricordant’s Health practice. He has specialised in strategic management and organisation development, having worked for 15 years in senior roles in the NHS, including as a Chief Executive and in acute, mental health and community services. He is a Natural Science graduate of Cambridge, and a member of the Organisation Design Forum, Institute of Health Management and the Association of Management, Education and Development. He is a Non-executive Director of the newly formed South Central Ambulance Trust.

Simon Thane, a Director of Tricordant Limited, spent his earlier career in manufacturing industry working for 15 years for Tube Investments, Lucas and Sony. This culminated with 7 years in profit and loss responsible roles with turnovers up to £320 million. He has led manufacturing sites employing up to 2,200 people. Simon has specialist knowledge of lean manufacturing and just-in-time (JIT) operations. Supplying customers such as Honda, Jaguar, Toyota and Sony. Since 1999 Simon has worked as a senior organisational development consultant and has been involved in a number of major projects with private and public sector clients including in the NHS.

Phil Hadridge, founding Director of idenk, started as a clinician in the NHS followed by a successful managerial career in NHS and Department of Health involving project leadership, planning and internal consultancy roles. His work as a facilitator now focuses on helping groups of all sizes address the issues they face in interesting and productive ways. Phil’s passion lies in helping others work with what inspires them, while maintaining a focus on implementation and outcomes. He supports and challenges many groups and organisations in the public, commercial and voluntary sectors.
