Back to the future – Learning from the Past and Exploring the Future of Organisations

I’ll let you in on a little secret… I actually love a bit of history. Now, don’t go inviting me to your next pub quiz night, but I’m fascinated by human development and the technologies we’ve created throughout history. British author and all-around know-it-all, Stephen Fry, released a book back in 2017 titled “Mythos.” In this book, he explores Grecian myths as a mechanism to learn about ourselves and the tensions present within the human condition, including Apollo, who represents order, music, truth, and prophecy, while Dionysus represents disorder, wine, festivity, and frenzy. History is a great teacher about human nature, helping us to recognise patterns and trends in human behaviour. By understanding how people have acted in the past, we can better predict how they are likely to act in the future.

Over the next few weeks and months, I will be exploring the future of organisations using historical tales, myths, and events to provoke, encourage, and help leaders to reflect on how to develop both themselves and their organisations. Though I’m no Stephen Fry, I hope to bring some insights, fun and inspiration to our discussions.
