Back to the future – Talos, the Bronze Automaton

Continuing our exploration of historical tales and their relevance to the future of organisations, let’s dive into the story of Talos. Talos was a giant bronze automaton in ancient Greek mythology, created by the god Hephaestus to protect the island of Crete. Talos would patrol the island, throwing rocks at any invaders and heating his body to red-hot temperatures to ward off enemies. 

Talos was a formidable guardian, designed to protect Crete from external threats. His presence alone was enough to deter potential invaders. Similarly, AI can serve as a powerful tool for organisational risk assessment, identifying potential threats and vulnerabilities before they become critical issues. By analysing vast amounts of data, AI can provide real-time insights that help leaders make informed decisions and mitigate risks. As Professor Christ Worley said in an interview about his research into agile practices, “agile firms were good at bringing information in from the outside, in essence the way they noticed what was going on and integrated that into their decision making was unique. Many firms scan their environment and develop scenarios, but the agile organizations integrated that better.” 

So, what does that mean for us today? AI’s ability to process and analyse data in real-time can enhance organisational security and resilience. For example, AI can monitor external market trends, monitor supply chains for disruptions, detect anomalies in financial transactions, and predict potential cybersecurity threats. This proactive approach allows organisations to respond swiftly and effectively to emerging risks, ensuring continuity and stability. 

Leadership Lesson: Just as Talos was a guardian of Crete, leaders must embrace AI as a guardian of their organisations. AI’s real-time analysis and risk assessment capabilities can provide valuable insights that enhance decision-making and protect against potential threats. One of the most amusing anecdotes about Talos involves his downfall. According to legend, Talos was defeated by the cunning sorceress Medea, who tricked him into removing the nail that sealed his vein of ichor, the divine fluid that kept him alive. Talos bled to death, proving that even the mightiest guardians can be undone by a clever adversary. This anecdote serves as a reminder that while AI can provide robust protection, leaders must remain vigilant and adaptable to counter unexpected challenges, and not fully outsource their strategic thinking to AI. 

The story of Talos teaches us the importance of vigilance and resilience in leadership. By embracing AI as a modern-day guardian, leaders can enhance their organisations’ security and stability.
