A Prescription for Successful Collaborations Week 2

At the end of last week’s article, I asked you to consider how you view collaborative working. I hope you did some thinking. For now, though, let’s move on.

This week, I want to explore the first two of the 7 key points I mentioned last week. These are the 7 points that, in our opinion, create the environment for collaboration success—our Prescription for Successful Collaborations.

In pharma, innovation is paramount, and patient outcomes are central;  collaborations can play a pivotal role in driving progress. Success, though, hinges not just on technical expertise, the latest technology or financial investment but on a deeper foundation – purpose, the WHY.

At the core of any effective collaboration lies a clear sense of purpose—a compelling reason why stakeholders come together to pursue shared goals.

An example of starting with why can be seen in initiatives like the Myelin Repair Foundation’s Accelerated Research Collaboration. By aligning stakeholders around a common purpose—to address systemic problems in medical research and commercial drug development—the collaboration has driven meaningful change and innovation in their field.

Starting with why is important for at least 3 key reasons

  1. Unifying vision that inspires and motivates all stakeholders
  2. Prioritises patient centricity, a cornerstone of pharma collaborations
  3. Fosters alignment and cohesion among diverse stakeholders

Leadership, especially in collaborations, isn’t just about making decisions—it’s about understanding the complex interplay between courage, authenticity, and self-perception. My good friend Steve Hearsum referenced the appeal of “mini selves” in a recent LinkedIn post to help shed light on how our interactions shape not only our perceptions of others but also our own identities.

Leaders in the pharmaceutical industry must recognise the power of self-perception and presence in shaping their leadership approach. By understanding that our beliefs about ourselves and others are fluid and shaped by our history and interactions, leaders can cultivate a deeper sense of authenticity and empathy.  Recognising this and acting on it has been a game changer for so many leaders.

What you could do this week:

Two actions for you to consider this week

  • Develop a plan to co-create a compelling vision for your collaborative venture and clearly communicate the WHY
  • Be courageous, embrace your own vulnerability, and foster a culture of diversity and inclusion that brings in different voices.
